SYNOPSIS

The Smell of Smoke tells the story of Dottie, a woman in her 80s who struggles with increasing loneliness and frustration over being forgotten by the world around her. One day, she wanders into the East Village bar where she and her late husband had spent many night with their friends, years before. As Dottie reminisces, the dive bar time travels between the 1940’s when the world seemed to belong to herself and her husband, and the sparse desperation that the 1990s offers her. Jason, a neighborhood kid, who is hustling his way through tough circumstances, follows her into the bar. Charming and manipulative, he takes advantage of Dottie’s vulnerable state. Dottie is captivated by the male attention. What will we sacrifice to not be forgotten and alone?

BIOGRAPHY OF THE DIRECTOR

Spring Sutter studied writing and acting in Seattle, Boston and New York. She acted, directed and produced theater before finding her way, early on, into the film and television production industry. She attended Boston University’s Theater School and then Columbia University where she majored in Socio-Anthropology and minored in Creative Writing. Storytelling is at the heart of her passion for life, education and travel. Adapting her short story, Dottie, into The Smell of Smoke was an opportunity to bring together some of the most talented people working in production and acting in New York, and with whom she feels honored to consider friends. Spring is also one of the founders of I’ll Tell You My Story, a non-profit skill-based storytelling workshop for teenage refugee girls in East Africa. She is a published poet and has a novel in the works. She has a completed feature script addressing race in the 1980s in America, as well as a collection of short stories ready for publication, or, production. She hopes you enjoy The Smell of Smoke.
